Belt Drive vs Chain Drive Garage Door Motors: Which Should You Choose?
When considering a garage door motor purchase, price and brand name are obvious purchasing considerations, as are the drive systems. The former is relatively simple to explain, and therefore most buyers pay attention to the drive system after the sale. However, the daily impact to regular garage users of the drive system may vary depending on proximity. More specifically, the impact of an attached garage or a garage that is below a bedroom may be more pronounced.
Chain drive motors use a metal chain. The chain drives a trolley that pulls the garage door and is used along a rail. This is a proven, reliable system that is low maintenance. It is a known system and has been used in many residential and light commercial applications. Chain drives are noisier than belt drives. Although the sound may not be noticed in the case of a detached garage, this am be more problematic in a connected garage below a bedroom. Noise
While not completely silent, belt drive is far quieter than a chain drive and thus should be more than enough for the majority of users to ignore noise concerns in their purchase decision. If your garage is attached, noise from a chain drive is likely the single largest complaint in the early morning household commute.
Durability
In a high cycle or commercial environment, durability issues are likely to arise sooner with a belt drive system. Indeed, a typical garage used 4-6 times daily is unlikely to see either system fail in 10+ years of typical use before a scheduled replacement. In these systems, all components will wear before the belt.
Maintenance
A chain drive system should be lubricated at most once yearly with a garage door chain lubricant. Belt systems should not be lubricated. Both systems will have accumulated enough slack to require an adjustment over time.
Cost
Currently, a comparable belt drive system is £30 – £80 more expensive than a chain drive system. This price difference is likely a reflection of the cost of the reinforcement of the belt system. That said, the price difference is relatively small and should not be a major consideration when upgrading to a mid-range drive systems.
Given that you will be spending roughly £600–£900 with the quality door and installation, the incentive to save £50 by getting the noisy drive mechanism is weak.
Cold Weather Performance
Both drive types will operate just fine in UK climate conditions. However, in extremely cold weather, some chain lubricants can solidify and thicken, so using a special low temperature lubricant is advised, especially for users who have unheated and unprotected garages from frost.
Which Should You Choose?
For an attached garage (one that shares a wall or ceiling with your living space), I would recommend the belt drive. The noise and vibration reduction will more than make up for the cost of the drive mechanism.
For detached garages or if cost is the only real constraint, then I would say you can safely go with the chain drive. It is a totally reliable and serviced drive. For applications in which noise isn’t a problem, the performance difference is not meaningful and saving the money is justified.
Another consideration is whether your motor supports smart home systems. Before assuming that a certain type of drive mechanism is the only type that supports smart systems, check the actual units.
